THE FEAR THAT MAKES YOU FEARLESS
1 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to his disciples first, “Be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered, nothing hidden that won’t be made known. 3 Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
4 “I say to you, my friends, don’t fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. 5 But I will show you the one to fear: Fear him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! 6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. 7 Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
8 “And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God, 9 but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. 10 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.”
CONTEXT OF LUKE 12:
Jesus first rebuked the Pharisees for their spiritual hypocrisy.
Jesus then rebuked the Law Experts for their religious legalism.
Jesus now turns to his disciples to offer a warning against and a pathway to break the power of hypocrisy.
WARNING: HYPOCRISY (OR ANY SIN) IS LIKE LEAVEN.
It starts out underneath the surface.
It spreads rapidly.
It sucks all the sweetness out of life.
THREE THINGS TO BREAK THE POWER OF HYPOCRISY:
#1 - LIVE LIFE WITHOUT ANY SECRETS:
In the Kingdom of God, there’s no such thing as a secret.
According to Jesus, our shameful acts and sinful whispers will one day be shouted from the rooftops.
The inevitable fact that our shameful words, attitudes and actions will one day become public makes hypocrisy ultimately pointless.
#2 – FEAR GOD & NOT PEOPLE.
When people are big then God seems small. But when God is big, your problems with people will seem small.
If we believed in a real heaven and a real hell then we’d be far less hypocritical in the way we live our life.
When we really believe that God cares for us then we’ll be far less afraid of what people may say, think or do.
#3 – CONFESS CHRIST SINCERELY & PUBLICALLY:
Jesus acknowledges those who acknowledge him and denies though who deny him.
The sincere confession of Jesus as Lord only comes through the power and enabling of the Holy Spirit.
“If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, & believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, You will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, & one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.”
"Oh God, help me live openly."
"Oh God, help me live fearlessly."
"Oh God, help me confess Christ publicly."
