THE FACT, FOCUS & FORCE OF THE RESURRECTION

LUKE 24:36–49

36 As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you!”

37 But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.

38 “Why are you troubled?” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?

39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

40 Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

41 But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence.

44 He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

46 He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”

SERMON NOTES

CONTEXT OF LUKE 24:

Scene #1 – Some female disciples of Jesus find his tomb empty. The angels tell them about the resurrection. They return and tell the other disciples but they cannot believe it.

Scene #2 – The risen Jesus interacts with some disciples on the road to Emmaus. He opens their eyes to see how all the Old Testament pointed to his life, death and resurrection.

Scene #3 – Jesus joins the other disciples to prove the reality of his resurrection and the difference that it makes.

THE FACT OF THE RESURRECTION:

The resurrection of Jesus is not a symbol or a myth. It’s a paradigm shattering historical event.

The Christian Gospel is myth become fact (C.S. Lewis) because God raised Jesus from the dead.

MINIMAL FACTS CASE FOR THE RESURRECTION:

FACT #1: The empty tomb.

FACT #2: The post mortem appearances.

FACT #3: The sincere belief of the apostles.

Facts are inconvenient. They carry a hard edge. You may not like them, but you have to explain them. How do you explain the facts surrounding the resurrection?

THE FOCUS OF THE RESURRECTION:

The resurrection is a key to unlock the meaning of the whole Bile. It makes the fuzzy parts of the OT become clear.

The resurrection puts the death of Jesus into greater focus. These two things always go together.

THE FORCE OF THE RESURRECTION:

The resurrection helps you live with greater certainty.

It transforms our fear into confidence and boldness.

The resurrection helps you live with greater hope.

It reveals a future that is unimaginably beautiful.

The resurrection helps you live with greater joy.

It reveals that we were created for another world.

Is the power of the resurrection of Jesus at work in you?
